Our School
The School of Social Work is one of the sixteen schools and colleges within the University of Connecticut, and one of eight graduate professional schools. Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut serves as the flagship for higher education and the sole doctoral degree granting public institution in the state. The University serves as a center for research, dedicated to excellence in higher education and fulfillment of its land grant mission. It is committed to meeting the educational needs of undergraduate, graduate, professional, and continuing education students and providing its faculty with the means to develop their intellectual capacity through teaching, research and interaction with society. The University of Connecticut is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
The School of Social Work, founded in 1946, has continued to offer a program that is built on a commitment to the values of the social work profession. Since its inception, the School has offered a Master's of Social Work degree (MSW) program that emphasizes the preparation of advanced practitioners. In the Summer of 2004, the School initiated an Advanced Standing option for MSW students. While the majority of the School's MSW students are from Connecticut and Massachusetts, students also come from other regions of the United States and other countries. In 2002, the School also opened a research based Ph.D. program in social work that attracts students from the State and beyond. The School is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
The Home Base
The School of Social Work is one of four graduate professional schools located in the Greater Hartford area. This proximity to the capital, one of the state's areas of greatest need, enables these professional programs to help carry out the University's public service mission, particularly to oppressed populations. The School of Social Work is located in its own building on the University’s Greater Hartford Campus in suburban West Hartford just four miles from downtown Hartford.
Being so close to the city, provides you exceptional opportunities for internships and other learning experiences related directly to your chosen profession. You will also benefit from the exceptional array of cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities available in Hartford and throughout the region. Hartford is home to such outstanding facilities as The Wadsworth Atheneum, the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, and top regional theaters like the Hartford Stage and TheaterWorks.
The city’s growing arts and entertainment scene also includes many of Connecticut’s top multicultural centers, such as the CRT Craftery, one of the premier African-American galleries in America; Guakia, home of Connecticut’s only theater devoted exclusively to the Puerto Rican experience; and the Charter Oak Cultural Center, which is dedicated to promoting, exploring, and celebrating diverse cultures.
Abundant and affordable housing makes it easy for you to live, study, and fully enjoy the area.
Small School, Major University
UConn School of Social Work graduate students benefit from the best of a variety of learning experiences. While the small school atmosphere is nurturing, you will also have full access to the educational resources of a major research institution.
